Task For G.P. Mechanics
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Dec. 29. Mechanics will be working against the clock to prepare two of the top racing cars in time for the first day of practice for the New Zealand Grand Prix next Wednesday. The 2.5 Cooper which will be driven by Phil Hill, of the United States, arrived at Whenuapai today in many pieces. It had to be taken apart and put into three crates for the flight from Sydney.
Mechanics will now have to reassemble the car, remove the present engine, and install another. The engine at present in the car will be rushed to Hastings, where it will be fitted into Bruce Abernethy’s 2.5 Cooper. All except two of the overseas drivers’ cars have arrived in the country. Those yet to come are the 2.5 Brabhams to be driven by the former world champion, Graham Hill, and Frank Gard-
ner, of Australia. Both cars are expected to arrive in time for practice.
Three cars were unloaded from the Waikare at Auckland today—two of them 1500 c.c: single-seater racing cars and the other a Lotus Cortina saloon car to be driven by lan Geoghegan, of Australia. His brother, Leo, will drive a 1500 Lotus 32, and the third car, a 1.5 Cooper, will be driven by Arnold Glass. The Grand Prix will be held on January 9.
