CHRISTMAS DISPLAY

Selwyn Street

Horne

Brighter lights than ever before shine in Selwyn street

lover the Christmas and New I Year holidays. They are at ’the home of Mr R. H. Stillwell, a city councillor and ' member of several other (local bodies, who for the i tenth year has decorated his home and made a “garden of peace and good will.” Mr Stillwell rushes home every evening to switch on the lights festooned in a big tree on his front lawn, around and over his suburban bungalow and throughout his garden. They and the lights and streamers on Selwyn street outside his home are the attraction for dozens of motorists from town and country already. As the Christmas holiday draws closer so will the crowds increase.

For many years Mr Stillwell made his livelihood from entertaining the public; for the last 10, and especially since he was left a widower, his bent for entertainment has been shared with his neighbours, and everyone with a car or able to catch a bus to Spreydon is counted as one.

With a zest that belies his years, Mr Stillwell sets out to enjoy Christmas and to share the enjoyment.

Festivities in Selwyn street will begin this week, when there will be outdoor film showings every night to complement the bright lights, Christmas tableaux and Nativity scenes. They will reach their climax on New Year’s Eve when a pipe band and, on last year’s attendances, a crowd of more than 1000 will herald 1965.

Drainage Tender.—The Christchurch Drainage Board has accepted a tender of £5672 16s, submitted by Mills and Graham, for the laying of drain piping in Sparks road. There were eight tenders ranging from the one accepted to one at £7570 12s Bd.
