AUSTRALIAN ARMY

Eight Extra Battalions (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) CANBERRA, Dec. 21. The Australian Army will gain eight new battalions and more flexibility under new plans announced in Canberra yesterday. The Army’s two divisions will each consist of nine battalions. This will be an increase of four each. Each division will be supported by an armoured reeonnaisance regiment, three field artillery regiments, a field engineer regiment, a signals regiment, and logistics units. The Army Minister, Dr. A. J. Forbes, said the new battalion organisation would be suited to both cold and limited war roles. It would be compatible with the organisation recommended by the armies of Australia’s principal allies, he said.

The new divisional struc- ! ture would also be better suited for conditions in Southi east Asia.
