MINISTER’S VIEW

“Prison Staff Vindicated”

(N.Z. Press Association>

WELLINGTON, Dec. 21

The prison administration at Mount Eden, Auckland, had been vindicated after an inquiry my Mr A. A. Coates. S.M., said the Acting Minister of Justice (Mr Marshall) today.

“The allegations made by the newspaper were in some cases shown to be untrue—and in others so extravagantly exaggerated as to give a false picture of the position. “Informed criticism from the press is welcome—but unsubstantiated charges based on flimsy evidence and irresponsible opinion, as the inquiry has shown these charges to be, are a reflection on the newspaper concerned rather than the prison service,” he said. Mr Marshall, who said the inquiry had been initiated after allegations by a former prisoner were published in an Auckland Sunday newspaper, said he hoped it would help undo some of the damage caused and give renewed confidence in the integrity of officers who were carrying out such difficult and exacting duties in the public interest.
