ENLARGED COUNCIL
Approval By Russia (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) MOSCOW, Dec. 20. The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, the Russian Parliament, has approved expansion of the United Nations Security Council, Tass said. The news agency said the Presidium ratified an amendment to the U.N. Charter to increase the Security Council membership from 11 to 15. It also approved an amendment to increase the membership of the U.N. Economic and Social Council from 18 to 27.
Both moves were designed to give newly-independent African and Asian nations more seats on the councils of the world organisation, which has expanded from 51 members when the Charter was approved to 115 members.
