Jellie Park Pool May Be Guarded
Uniformed security officers with guard dogs may be employed by the Waimairi County Council to prevent vandalism in the new lido pool at Jellie Park. The county engineer (Mr I. Calvert) told the council last evening that he was perturbed about the possibility of vandals causing damage which could affect the operation of the pool.
Quotations from security firms for patrolling the area several times each night ranged from £27 to £37 a month. The chairman (Mr P. I. Colligan) said the council could take a risk for a while and ascertain whether such a costly service was warranted.
A security service could be used for 12 months on trial, said Cr. W. T. Rice. He thought the timing of each visit should be staggered so that a pattern was not created. Mr Colligan said he was perturbed at the cost involved and suggested that it might be cheaper in the long run for the council to build a flat near the pool. The tenant could act as a watchman. Such an idea might
prove to be worthwhile and an econmical deterrent. The council decided to instruct the county engineer to investigate further the question of providing a security system and bring down a report on costs.
