Compulsory Treatment
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 8. Changes in law to make compulsory treatment for people suffering from alcoholism would not make ’“a very big dent” in New Zealand problem of intemperate drinkers, Dr. Alfred Auerbeck, of San Francisco, said in Auckland yesterday. “The first big dent will come when alcoholism is recognised as a community problem by the community and the individual concerned,” he said. Dr. Auerbeck is chairman of San Francisco’s Committee on Alcoholism, a body formed to deal with the disease in a city which has the largest alcoholics rate in America. One person in seven is an intemperate drinker.
