Fire Damages Furniture
(New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, November 8. Damage estimated at more than £20,000 was caused by a fire in Wilson’s furniture bulk finishing and polishing store in Yarrow street, Invercargill, early this morning.
The old wood, concrete and corrugated iron building was well alight when the Invercargill Fire Brigade arrived about 2.45 a.m. and flames were shooting out the east portion of the building. Just as the brigade arrived, the front windows blew out on to the pavement. It took the brigade using
five deliveries half an hour to get the blaze under control. Firemen said today that another five minutes and the entire back portion of the roof would have collapsed. Mr A. Fox, manager of the factory, said that more than 90 per cent of both the building and furniture were ruined. Several antiques are included among the ruins. There is considerable smoke and water damage.
