Wool Board ‘‘Not Interested 9
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, November 8. It seemed the Wool Board was not interested in participating in the next “Miss New Zealand” contest, the contest promoter, Mr A. J. Brown, said today from Dunedin. Mr Brown said each year since 1960 he had approached the board and did so again last week as he did not want to be “humbugged.”
Early this year, when it became known that “Miss New Zealand,” Miss Lyndal Cruickshank, daughter of an Invercargill wool broker, would promote exclusively nylon products, such a furore was raised in all sections of the wool industry that the board arranged a woollen wardrobe valued at more than £3OO. Mr Brown said today the contest depended on sponsors and he would have liked Wool Board participation as he knew full well the value of wool to the nation. He said the impression he gained from the board’s director, Mr O. Dillon, was
that the board was “just not i interested.” Mr Brown said he had i quoted a figure of £5OOO to , £6OOO for participation by the board. “But the board never asked to hear even my submissions i on how the amount could be i used.’ My view was that the amount could simply be a i guarantee, not a certain outlay.” The budget for the whole contest, said Mr Brown, was around £50,000 and until last year, when a sponsored “Miss ' New Zealand” booklet was ; produced, he lost money on ; the contest each year.
