Dairy Expert Dies

(N Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) ROME, Nov. 7. Mr Charles Whittington Burnard, aged 65. a consultant to a dairy co-operative company in Wellington, died today after boarding an airliner bound for Istanbul, Rome airport police said. Mr Burnard and his wife had come from London three days ago. They were on their way back to New Zealand. Mr Burnard was formerly director of the Dairy Industry Information Service. Before his appointment, he was a farming journalist and later editor and then manag-ing-director of the “Dairy Exporter.” He was chairman of the Dominion council of Heritage in 1954 and a member of the Dominion appeal committee of C.0.R.5.0. “I have known Charles Burnard for the last 15 years as a warm and generous friend,” said the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) tonight. “He was one of those people who truly added something to any circle in which he moved or any community in which he lived. "Through the years the dairy industry has been served by some outstanding persons and Charles Burnard stood high in that comnany.” Mr Taiboys said no-one had a more intimate knowledge

than Mr Burnard of the struggles of the dairy farmer in the 1930’5, and he used the pages of the “Dairy Exporter” to promote the spirit of a cooperative industry. He was one of the great builders of the industry. MR A. S. MUIR (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE. November 8. A man whose military record included service in two world wars, the award of the Order of the British Empire and two mentions in dispatches in World War I and . three mentions in dispatches ;in World War 11, died at his home in Gisborne yesterday. He was Mr Allan Stanley Muir, managing-director of the “Gisborne Herald.” He had had a short illness. Born in Gisborne in 1894, Mr Muir was a son of the late Mr and Mrs A. L. Muir and a pupil at Nelson College, where he was prominent as a Rugby player and athlete. Mr Muir was a member of! the Wairoa Borough Council,' Gisborne City Council and! Cook Hospital Board, Gis-i borne Rotary Club as president and Poverty Bay club' as vice-president. He was a member of the ex-! ecutive of the Gisborne Re-, 'turned Services’ Association.
