Ikeda’s Successor May Be Sato
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright)
TOKYO, November 8 Mr Eisaku Sato remain ed a narrow favourite today to succeed Japan’s resigning Prime Minister, Mr Hayato Ikeda with only hours to go before a final choice emerged from the last fortnight’s intricate manoeuvring inside the ruling Liberal-Democratic Party.
Political observers said he faced a strong challenge from a “stop Sato” coalition formed by the two other contenders, Mr Ichiro Kono, the 66-year-old State Minister, the party’s “strong man.” and Mr
Aiichiro Jujiyama, aged 67, a former Foreign Minister. The two party officials entrusted with the task of arriving at an agreed successor after sounding the views of Diet members were calling on Mr Ikeda in hospital today after a series of discussions with the three candidates, lasting late into last night. Last night’s intense political activity and the postponement from today until tomorrow of the Parliamentary Party’s meeting to endorse the new Prime Minister were interpreted by political observers as meaning attempts to select Mr Ikeda’s successor “amiably” were deadlocked.
