Cost Of Living
Sir, —The higher cost of living is shown by the following recent percentage increases. Meat, 20 to 50; poultry, 25; bacon, 9; postages, 33; rail and bus fares, up to 20; gas, about 8; bread, 20 (a 5d loaf now costs 6d); eggs, 12; cakes, 11; stationery, 5 to 20; excess payment to doctors, 66; non-reduction of sugar, equivalent to 66. Clothing, miscellaneous grocery, and vegetable items have all increased considerably over 5; governmental rentals have soared; and necessary assorted repairs, in varying degrees, up to 30; so the meagre 6 per cent fails to compensate for these heavily increased percentages. Various beneficiaries are considerably worse off, while the boasted reduction in income tax means little or nothing to them. Many beneficiaries, compulsorily retired at 60. are now too old to augment these incomes by accepting any temporary work, yet year after year they see their benefits viciously reduced by the continuous devaluation of the currency.—Yours etc., S. November 5, 1964.
