Ambulance And Scouts Benefit

Cheques were presented to representatives of two organisations at a meeting of the Rangiora Lions Club as a result of recent fund-raising activities undertaken by the club. The president (Mr W. Frizzell) presented a cheque for £64 to Mr A. E. Whitehouse, chairman of the Rangiora sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association, and a cheque for £ll7 12s to Mr M. Allan representing the Ashley local association of the boy scouts. The funds for the ambulance association were raised by a superphosphate drive and the funds for the boy scouts by light bulb sales. In accepting the cheque for the ambulance association. Mr Whitehouse said the work of the Lions was very much appreciated and the money would go towards buying some permanent asset.

After expressing appreciation for the help given scouting Mr Allan said that with the establishment of a group at Cust there were now six in the area. All groups had their own dens, the latest being that at Kaiapoi, which would be officially opened today.

Attending the meeting were the zone chairman. Dr. M. J. Otley, president of the Ashburton club, Mr R. Crum and other Ashburton representatives, and Mr V. M. Busby from Christchurch. Mr D. Ensor reported on a visit to Harihari for the charter night of a new club there and on a project to raise funds towards the provision of a coat of arms for the Rangiora Borough Council.

An offer of an acre of ground by Mr D. R. Petrie to grow mangolds to provide revenue for project funds was accepted. On display w r ere “traffic cones” which the club is giving for the use at the pedestrian crossings in Rangiora and Kaiapoi, when the school traffic patrols are operating. The guest speaker, Mr E. D. R. Smith gave some of his impressions, and showed slides of aspects of a world tour. Mr Smith spoke of the tremendous influence for good of the United States in the world today. Contrary to popular belief he found the Americans he met quite well informed about New Zealand.
