Crest For Hagley High School
Regret that the motto of the Christchurch West High School will no longer be on the crest when the merger with the Christchurch Technical College to form the Hagley High School take place in 1966 was expressed by a meeting of the Christchurch West High School board of governors.
The school motto —“Palma Non Sine Pulvere” (“No Reward without Hard Work”) — will be replaced by the Technical College motto —“Honestum Quod Utile” (“What Is Useful Is Honest”). The crest will also have a gold border. “It is a matter of great reget that our motto is being replaced. It is superior to that of the Technical College,” said Mr J. Shanahan.
The principal (Mr T. R. Richards) said that a compromise had been necessary. The opposition was so strong that a stalemate would have resulted. The next crest would retain the white cross of St. Andrew on a maroon background.
