SCHOOLS’ COUNCIL
Bias Denied Members of the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council could look impartially at the question of the establishment of another single-sex school without feeling they must have allegiance to the type of school they represented on the council, said Dr. C. D. Ellyett, the deputy-chairman, yesterday. It was said at a meeting of the Christchurch Boys’ High School board of governors on Thursday evening that there was no prospect of another single-sex school being established in Christchurch while the Secondary Schools’ Council was made up of predominantly co-educational school representatives. Dr. Ellyett, who first suggested the splitting of the Burnside High School into two schools, said it was clear that parents in the area were not unanimous on the question.
He said the fact that the Boys’ High School would welcome discussions on another single-sex school was a clear indication of pressure in that direction. There was the difficulty that in the event of any changes, there would have to be two single-sex schools, because one only would create an imbalance in the area.
