ECONOMY RUN

Two Teams From Aust. Four Australians are preparing to fly to New Zealand to take part in the tenth Mobil Economy Run on November 13 and 14. Because of previous commitiments the two outright I winners of the Australian run, held last month, are now not able to visit New Zealand. In their place two Victorian car enthusiasts, Messrs D. Anderson and J. Bryce, who drove a Citreon IDI9 in the fourday, 1382-mile Australian event, will arrive In Wellington on November 8. They were outright class zinners and runners-up for the Perpetual Trophy, being the second car among the nine class winners to cover the total distance of the run in the shortest possible time—after any time or traffic code penalties had been imposed. In the New Zealand event they will drive a Citroen made available by a Wellington j firm and try to better their! Australian average miles a gallon figure of 43.93. Two other drivers in the Australian run, Messrs E. Lane and S. Pomroy, have decided to bring their own car across the Tasman to compete in the New Zealand event. In the Australian run , their Morris 1100 averaged 51.22 miles a gallon to win its class, but they are bringing to New Zealand the Morris Mini-Minor which, driven by two women, won its class with an average of 54.58 miles a gallon. Although not eligible for prizes or awards in the New Zealand economy run field of 26 cars, the Australian visitors will drive under the same rules as those applying to the New Zealand competitors. However, there will obviously be some rivalry between the Australians and the two New Zealand teams who will drive a Citroen and MiniMinor over the 513-mile route from Wellington to Auckland. Next year the Australian visit will be returned by the two New Zealanders who return the highest ton-miles a gallon figure during next week’s run.
