JAPANESE “PUZZLED”
Inquiry By Manager Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 30. The manager of the New Zealand Olympic team (Mr W. A. Stevenson) said today that he had made a thorough investigation of the incident in which some members of the team bowed before the Emperor at the closing ceremony in Tokyo last Saturday. As well as interviewing team managers and others, he made four telephone calls to Japan during which he had spoken to leading figures and court officials. The Japanese were surprised and puzzled at the attention the matter had been given in New Zealand. They did not consider there had been any discourtesy to the Emperor, and regarded the incident as in keeping with the happy spirit of the occasion. Mr Stevenson said that everything he had been told had confirmed that there had been much ado about nothing. All members of the team had in all ways been worthy representatives of New Zealand both on and off the field, and New Zealand had every reason to be proud of them.
