50 Years Later
(N.Z. Prest Atsociation) AUCKLAND, Oct 18. The men who began a legend of Anzac fighting courage have gone their different ways again after three days in Auckland of celebration, feasting, hand-shaking and commemoration parades. Those of them who remembered previous Main Body reunions said it was one of the best the “oid 1914 soldiers” had ever attended. It marked the fiftieth anniversary of the sailing of the Main Body of the Ist New Zealand Expeditionary Forte for Egypt on October 16,1914. Veterans who travelled hundreds of miles to join in the reunion with old com-
'T»des were greatly heartened to find that the numbers “on parade” were not too far short of those at the last major reunion in Auckland 10 years ago.
More than 900 attended ail or some of the various functions. They enjoyed extraordinary hospitality from organisations and individuals. It included free lunches, sight-seeing trips, refreshments, theatre parties and free accommodation at city hotels, the last a joint gesture from the hotel-owning companies. On Saturday the veterans embarked for a tour of the Wadtemata harbour. They had a “get-together” social on Saturday evening, and the official programme was brought to an end today with a service at the Cenotaph.
