Tasman Lad To Come South

"Th« Prezz** Special Service

WELLINGTON, October 19. The Wataui Handicap winner, Tasman Lad, is to go to Christchurch for the New Zealand Cup. In the meantime he will race in the weagbt-for-age Harcourt Stakes at Trentham on Monday. Last season's form indicated that Tasman Lad would handle the two miles of the New Zealand Cup. He beat Apa in the Hawke’s Bay President’s Handicap, finished second to Gay Filou in the Pahiatua Sonny Smith Memorial, won the Wanganui Gold Cup, beating Richetta, was second in the Taranaki Cattex Gold Cup, second to Bandon in the Wellington President’s Handicap, and won the Opunake Cup. Tasman Lad is by the New Zealand sire, Ocean Spray IL from the Coronach mare, Flying Coronach. Ocean Spray II is by Neptune from the Foxbridge mare, Cardoness, dam also of Braemar and The Wash, so there is plenty of staying blood on both sides of the pedigree. Two of the three-year-olds which will oppose Tasman Lad in the Harcourt Stakes are the Wellington Guineas winner. His Grace, and the beaten favourite in that race, Hio. His Grace has done well since Saturday’s win and with the Hartourt Stakes distance reduced this year to about one mile and a quarter he should match the older runners. Rio too has done well since

Saturday. He was baffled by the soft ground and his chances were not improved by drawing No. 1 at the barrier and racing on the cut-out ground on the inside. Rio’s stablemate, Starlit, which finished second to Home On The Range last week, has been accepted for in the Desert Gold Stakes for three-year-old fillies. She ran on much better than she had done in her two Erevious starts at Trenthan) and er meeting with Hakawai, Trial Offer and Clipjoint will make it a good race. Trial Offer, which was distressed after the Wellington Guineas, has picked up. Her trainer and part-owner, B. Hayter, eould not explain Trial Offer’s poor showing. A veterinary examination did not reveal the cause. It is possibe that she was suffering from the effects of a seasonal complaint. Beauzaml’s failure in the Wellington Handicap could not be explained by the trainer, C. M. Jiflings. Beauzami lost ground coming to the half-mile and dropped to the rear. He ran on again in the straight but could finish only ninth. Beauzami has done well during the week-end and he will be ridden in the Watkins Handicap on Saturday by R. J. Jury. To Be Spoiled The Wellesley Stakes winner, Dear Pal, has been accepted for in the Karitane Handicap. She will start either in that race or in the Roseneath Handicap on Monday, depending on the track conditions and the barrier draw. After the Wellington meeting Dear Pal Is to be spelled, so she will not race at Christchurch. Last week Dear Pal’s dam, Deodar, foaled a filly to the Stardust horse, Stunning. There is also a yearling by Stunning from Deodar, both owned by Dear Pal’s breeder, Mr R. R. Gallon. Track conditions are going to make a difference to the fields for the second day at Trentham. One which will be effected is Hushaway, which at present is in the Awatea Handicap. He failed to handle the soft ground last week. Unless the track is firm this week he will not start. Shipmate, a stablemate of Hushaway, will not race again at the meeting. He was another hampered by the going on Saturday.
