REPLACING HOME
Movement Reported (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, October 19. A strong Conservative movement began over the week-end to replace Sir Alec Douglas-Home as party leader, according to British press reports today. The “Daily Express” said the move began among several backbenchers but so far did not have the active support of former ministers. One former Cabinet Minister said: “Get rid of Sir Alec should have thought that would be a little premature/ But another senior Conservative said: “There is a feeling the change must take place by February. There might well be another General Election next summer and we would want Sir Alec’s successor to have time to play himself in.” Only one man was being mentioned as a possible successor—the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Reginald Maudling, the “Daily Express” said.
The other four former contenders—Mr R. A. Butler, Mr Quintin Hogg, Mr Edward Heath and Mr lan Macleod—had all lost favour.
