READING TUTOR
Appointment At Victoria (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. The reading ability of some students at Victoria University is so low that an instructor in remedial reading will join the staff next year. The university council approved the appointment today, the first of its kind at any New Zealand university. It follows a precedent established by most of the better American universities.
If a student’s reading standard hinders his academic progress, teachers will refer him to the instructor for special training, the vice-chancel-lor (Dr. J. Williams), told the council.
Many students could not read effectively or fast enough to make academic progress, he said. “Many people come to university who obviously have the ability to pass examinations and work hard, and yet fail. Many fail because they have reading problems or just do not know how to study.
“It is our job to give the obviously talented, yet obviously retarded, student, every assistance,” said Dr. Williams.
