CHAMBERLAIN HAS IMPRESSIVE RUN
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) TOKYO, October 19. New Zealand’s chances of winning the men’s and women’s 800 metres double at the Tokyo Olympics appear bright after the running of the women’s semi-finals today. Miss Marise Chamberlain, of Christchurch, ran a Snelllike race to win her semi-final impressively.
Her winning time of 2min 4.6 sec was half a second slower than the winning time of the French girl, Maryvonne Dupureur, in the first heat, but the way she ran today suggested the New Zealander could improve on this time. Miss Chamberlain, the only one in her heat to use a crouch start, ran fourth once the field settled down 200
metres from the start, following the Hungarian, Nagy Szabo, the German, Anita Worner, and the Jugoslav, Gizela Farkas, ahead of her. SIX-YARD LEAD They had a lead of six yards over the rest of he field after 300 metres. „ Gerarda Kraan, of the Netherlands, closed the gap and Miss Chamberlain moved up into second place behind the German girl. At the start of the final lap Miss Chamberlain was running a comfortable second
and stayed behind Miss Worner until just before the entrance to the straight. SLACKENED PACE Seemingly without effort, the New Zealand girl, running out wide, overhauled and passed Miss Worner with 90 metres remaining. In the straight she slackened her pace but won by more than five yards. In the run to the tape the German girl was passed by three more runners and failed to qualify for tomorrow’s final. She had been regarded as one of Miss Chamberlain's greatest threats. Miss Dupureur’s winning time in the first heat broke
■ the 1960 games record by • l-ssec. The second runner in the first heat, Antje Gleichfeld, of Germany, finished in 2min ; 4.6 sec—the same as Miss I Chamberlain. i EIGHT QUALIFIERS The eight qualifiers for the • final were: Dupureur i (France), Gleichfeld (Germany), Erik (U.S.S.R.), Smith i (Britain), Chamberlain (New Zealand), Szabo (Hungary), I Packer (Britain), Kraan : (Netherlands). !
