October 20 THE VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT AT KAIAPOL The committee appointed by members of the sth Company, C.R.V. held their first meeting on Tuesday evening last at the Barrack room. Present: Dr. Beswick (chairman), Messrs Revell, C. Dudley (jun.), Black, Hebden, Hewlings, Cuff, Rose, Ellis, Lizard (committeemen). Several of the old rules were adopted, and also several new ones framed and carried. Messrs Hebden and Hewlings were appointed secretary and treasurer for the ensuing 12 months. It was decided that the undress uniform should consist of a black French cap, with No. 5 in white on the front, blue serge jumpers, with scarlet shoulder knots, and dark trousers; to be procured at the expense of the corps. A drill instructor is also about to be appointed.
THE LATE CASE OF STABBING.—We received yesterday a letter from another of No. 1 Company of Volunteers, repudiating all connection on behalf of the Company with the man. Webb, who recently made his appearance in the Resident Magistrate's Court Our reporter tells us that he was mistaken in the number of the Company, which should have been No. 2 instead of No. 1. We trust we shall be pardoned by No. 1 Company for the mistake, and by No. 2 for its correction. CORRESPONDENCE SIR,—In answer to the letter which appears in your issue of to-day, signed by Mr Crosbie Ward, with reference to the late stabbing case, Regina v. John Webb, in which Mr Ward states that Webb’s name is not on the roll of No. 1 Company of Volunteers, may I be permitted to state my report was incorrect as to Webb being
a member of No. 1 Company, but I find that he is enrolled as a member of No. 2 Company Canterbury Rifle Volunteers. I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, YOUR REPORTER. ;' ’ STEAM SERVICE Tenders are required by the Provincial Government of Canterbury for the performance of the undermentioned services —A steamer to ply fortnightly between Lyttelton and Dimedin; calling each way (weather permitting) at Akaroa and Timaru. To leave iLyttelton, on the day of departure for each trip, not later than 12 a’clock noon. To carry local and Australian mails free. Tenders. . . to state what additional sum will be required for the steamer to call each way at Pigeon Bay; also the maximum rate of freight at which passengers and goods will be carried. WM.
