RED FLARES COMPLAINT

Misleading Signals (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 19. The police have asked the Marine Department to dissuade Japanese fishing trawlers from using red flares to signal to each other when operating within sight of the New Zealand coast. The move comes after the investigation of “distress” flares reported in recent weeks by residents of Muriwai. Piha and other west coast beaches. In each case, searches for a vessel in distress proved abortive and it was found that Japanese trawlers were operating in the area. A police official said a red flare was recognised internationally as a distress signal.
