YACHTING Drifting Mark Mars Pennant Series

A drifting mark marred the first of the Estuary pennant series held yesterday afternoon off Mortens Jetty. The first lap of the two-lap triangular course had been completed by the open fleet of 74, split into eight classes, when the most northern mark of the course drifted from its position and caused considerable confusion.

As a result of three protests being lodged, officials met and, subject to ratification by the Inter-Estuary Committee, abandoned all races except the P class. The pennant series will now be sailed over three races instead of four.

In the P-class championship race, for the pennant series, Flee (A. Ineson, Christchurch), finished fourth but was unplaced as a result of a ruling that the sail number used on this boat was registered in another boat’s name.

The Mount Pleasant trophy race on Saturday afternoon was dominated by junior skippers sailing from the front mark in the 40-boat fleet. Excellent performances were turned in by the winner, Defiant (W. H. Beere), in his Australian Moth, and by the second-placed man, J. Cairnney, in his Zephyr, Hustler. It was Cairney’s second sail in this craft, so his performance was quite remarkable. Bosanova, the new Junior Cherub from the Christchurch club, was impressive, and could well be a contender for representative honours in the trials next month. Gemini, the Shearwater, had another good day and again returned fastest time. Fastest in the Finn class on both days was Coughin (F. G. B. Simpson). The P-class skipper, M. Agnew, again confirmed that he is the best in this class in the province. He had a fine win on Saturday in the light conditions, but on Sunday was pressed by B. Boulton, and finished only eight seconds in front. Results were:
