Meat Grades Must Have Uniformity

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 10. The appointment of a three-man committee to review meat grades in relation to market requirements was announced today by the chairman of the Meat Board (Sir John Ormond).

The chairman of the committee will be Mr P. W. Smallfield, former DirectorGeneral of Agriculture. Mr S. D. Beeves, of Gisborne, and Mr A. Crichton Wright, of Dunsandel will be the other members. “One of the foundations of our success in gaining premium prices for lamb has been our grading policy.” said Sir John Ormond. “Customers confidently order New Zealand lamb knowing they are getting the grade they want. -The board has reaffirmed its policy that uniformity in grades is of the utmost importance.

The committee on grades has been set up as an independent committee to review grades in relation to market requirements. “This is a committee of practical men who will make a thorough study both in the United Kingdom and elsewhere and report to the board. “1 should maku it clear,” said Sir John Ormond, “that the setting up of this committee does not envisage any departure from the basic sheep breeds and types on which the export lamb industry is so successfully based.”
