HANDUNG OF CARGO

New System For Port Importers and exporters in Canterbury should be placed on the same basis as those operating at Auckland, where no extra charge was made for wharf-handling costs to the shipper and consignee, the costs being included in the freight, said Mr A. J. Sowden. the secretary-manager, in a report to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. He was reporting on the new system of cargo handling at the ship’s side. The Railways Department will discontinue employing waterside workers at railway ports, including Lyttelton, from the end of the year. Mr Sowden said there had been disputes in Auckland and Taranaki, and the board should approach the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) for a decision if negotiations failed.
