(From Our Own Reporter)
HUTT PARK RACEWAY, September 2.
Junior Royal graduated to the verge of New Zealand Gup class when he got up in the last few strides to shade the hot faVourite, Vanderford, in the President’s Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting at Hutt Park Raceway tonight.
Junior Royal, driven tonight by R. Young, got away reasonably well and he. raced in the middle of the field. It was late in the race when he put in his challenge wide out. on the track and just when Vanderford looked to have the race won Junior Royal got to him. Raced by Messrs C. T. and R. R. Wilson, of West Melton, Junior Royal is a six-year-old ' entire by Fallacy from Royal Triumph. He is trained at West Melton by J. D. latten.
Junior Royal came in for surprisingly strong support. He paid £8 9s 6d for a win and £3 5s for a place. Vanderford’s performance was a splendid one. He was at the rear of the bunch until inside the last three furlongs. He received a charmed run through on the rails and gathered in the leaders in a few strides on straightening, up. He came to the end of his run 50 yards out Jay Ar recorded a sound trial for his campaign in Auckland later this week when he made up ground for third, only a neck behind Vanderford.
Affiliate and Dandy Briar broke at the start. Maisie Direct began best from King Hal and Jay Ar. Maisie Direct led past the nine furlongs from Affiliate, which had recovered quickly, King Hal, Lady Charles, Master Alan, Grouse, Junior Royal, Jay Ar, Waitaki Han-
over, Gay Reel, and Vanderford.
There was little change until the last three furlongs, when Grouse stopped and checked Jay Ar and Gay Reel. Maisie Direct led Lady Charles, King Hal, and Waitaki Hanover in the straight with Jay Ar wide out and Affiliate handy. Vanderford raced through on the inside with Jhnior Royal coming fast wide out and getting up to win by half a neck. Jay Ar was a neck back shading Waitaki Hanover, with a length to King Hal and Master Alan, which were clear of Lady Charles, Affiliate and Gay Reel. Double Pays £lO2 The first night winner, Quesnel, completed the night’s double when he wore down Adio Morn over the last few yards of the Stewards’ Handicap, a race run in driving rain. Thb Junior Royal-Quesnel double paid £lO2 5s 6d for £l. The favourite, Douce, ran in at the start and checked a number of runners, including Carina Star, Revel Time and Dorstan. Quesnel led out but surrendered the lead to Flying Melody at the end of a furlong. They were followed past the nine furlongs by Count Windermere, Thunder Royal, Trysail, Golden Sari, Adio Morn and Ruling Caste. Adio Mom raced to the front at the two furlongs and led to the straight from Ruling Caste, Thunder Royal, Count Windermere, Trysail,
and Quesnel, which was having difficulty working clear. Quesnel gradually overhauled Adio Mom and won by half a length. Adio Mom was half a length in front of a solid finisher in Silver Mica, with Thunder Royal a good fourth. Golden Sari finished well for fifth ahead of Flying Melody, Trysail, and Dorstan.
