Island Scientific Stations .. - • < * Two men are training at the Geophysical Observatory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Christchurch to carry out the observatory’s ionosphere programme at Campbell Island, and a man who will take over the observatory’s programme at Raoul will arrive for training soon. Mr D. Carran, of the Post Office, Wellington, will be senior ionosphere observer at Campbell Island, and Mr K. C. Kibblewhite, of the Civil Aviation Department, Wellington, will be junior ionosphere observer there. They started training with the observatory about a fortnight ago, and will leave for Campbell Island with the normal relief vessel about the end of next month. Mr D. Thorp, a radio technician from the Civil Aviation Department, Wellington, will arrive at the observatory about mid-September and continue there until about October 23. He will then spend a week at the Seismological Observatory, Wellington, before going to Raoul Island, where he will look after the ionosphere and seismology programmes as well as carrying out radio maintenance.
