Sound Sale For Bulls At Blenheim

“The Press" Special Service

BLENHEIM, September 2.

Bulls met a sound .’sale when the Marlborough Pedigree Beef Breeders’ Association held its first annual sale and show here today. Top quality entries met a particularly good inquiry. The demand was strongest for the Aberdeen Angus breed which had easily the biggest representation in the show and sale.

Out of the 53 bulls of four breeds which came-under auction, 36, dr nearly 68 per cent were sold for a total of

6170gns and an average of almost 171jgns each. Twenty-six Aberdeen Angus out of an offering of 34 were sold at prices ranging from lOOgns to 395gns and averaging nearly 176Jgns. The top price of 395gns was paid for the two-year-old Bahram 14th of Taimate offered by Hickman Bros. It was purchased by A. V. Neal, of Seddon, as a stud sire. Mir J. Marshall, of Waianiwa, Southland, selected this bull as the second prize-winner among the Aberdeen bulls, Mr Marshall’s selection for first prize winner among the black bulls was F. A. Elliott’s two-year-old, Brackenfield Edwin • Elco, sired by the Perth prize-winner, Balgour Jumbo Eric. The judge said that this was the best-brought-out bull in the class and was in bis opinion the best for show purposes. Its purchaser at 365gns was C. F. Shanks and Company, of Blenheim. In the Aberdeen Angus class Mr Marshall said that there were many good headed and good footed bulls, but some were showing the effects of the poor season. In general it was a very pleasing exhibition. For North Island Mr J. V. Evans, New Zealand stud stock manager of Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., bought Aberdeen Angus bulls for Wairoa, Gisborne and Palmerston North and he was the undef-bidder on the two top priced bulls in the sale. Eight of the 10 Herefords offered were bought for prices ranging from 80 to 230ghs and for an average of almost 154}gns. The top price of 230gns was paid by R. D. Middleton, of Clarence Bridge, for Matarihi Bachelor Boy 4th from J. G. Murray, which was second prize winner in the show. Mr Murray's first prize winner, Matarihi Clodder, was sold to Bluff Station, Ltd., for 210gns. The show judge, Mr R. Mead, of Nelson, said it was his opinion that to retain their place in the beef world the Hereford breeders had to concentrate on size and fleshing qualities without coarseness. He considered that the bulls in the entry had good heads, colour and feet. Two Beet Shorthorn bulls sold for 200 and 150gns respectively. The first prize winner in the breed and the champion of all the breeds, the polled Antrim Kelso, from K. M. Dysart, was bought by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., for Bayflelds Estate (Horbrata) for 200gns. Mr J. Wyllle, of Omlhl, who was the Beef Shorthorn judge, said that the winner was a very smooth red bull with plenty of length and a particularly good mover. The second prize winner, from the same vendor, was . a horned bull which was very deep but did not have the smoothness of the winner. There was no demand for the offering of three Galloways from R. C. Grigg and all of these were passed in. Mr R. McDonald, of Seddon, who judged these, said that they were' a good line with the top bull showing more quality than the others. He selected Mr Grigg’s Consort of Tempello for the top honour.
