NATIONAL WEALTH

N.Z. Ninth In World (N.Z: Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, September 2. The “Financial Times” today placed Australia eighth and New Zealand ninth in a “rough guide” of the world’s 15 richest nations. The United Kingdom came near the bottom of the. list at 13. The “Financial. Times” calculated the gross national product per head of population in American dollars for each country. It admitted this was “very crude” and comparisons' taken on this basis “must not be taken too seriously.” Measured in gross national product per head, Kuwait came first, followed by Qatar—two major oil-produc-ing areas, now twice as rich as their closest rivals and looking like staying ahead for the forseeable future. The United States, in third position, could not catch these two, and “no-one will catch the United States for at least 10 to 15- years, if then.” The list then placed Canada, Sweden, Switzerland and Luxembourg ahead of Australia and New Zealand, with Denmark. West Germany, France, United Kingdom, Norway and Belguim following.
