MAKARIOS POLICY
No Arms On Cyprus ( N.Z.P.A .-Reuter —Copyright) ALEXANDRIA, Sept. 2. President Makarios said in Alevandria yesterday that Cyprus should be demilitarised- He told a news conference that he would not accept the retention of bases on the island as a condition for union with Greece. President Makarios, who held week-end talks in Alexandria with President Nasser, said they had discussed the 'Question of a joint defence arrangement for the area. But be added he did not think it was wise for anyone to reveal matters of defence or of a military nature. Asked if he would still go ahead with plans for negotiations with Russia in view of his talks in Alexandria, President Makarios replied: “We must secure assistance from any country willing to help us, either from East or West, provided such aid was given without conditions.”
