ENGINE’S SALVAGE

New Siding Made (N.Z. Press Association) _ WHANGAREI, ’ Sept 1. A siding alongside the existing track is being prepared by Railways Department workmen at the site of Sunday’s train tragedy, two miles from Opua, on the ■ OppaKawakawa line. The siding will be used for the attempted recovery of the double-unit diesel engine on which one man lost his life and a schoolboy narrowly escaped death. Extra filling is being used to strengthen the siding, which is on the seaward side of the main line. A bulldozer was taken to the area yesterday and began preparing the ground. Mobile cranes have been sent to Otiria from Auckland and Wellington. A work gang arrived this morning.
