WIDENING OF BRIDGE
. Survey To Be Made Arrangements have been made to survey the site of the Stoney creek bridge near Kaikoura with a view to submitting a design for a full width bridge, according to a letter received from the Ministry of Works at a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). The association's general manager (Mr E. S. Palliserl had requested imformation on the bridge after its condition I had been discussed at last month’s meeting of the I council. Mr Palliser had asked whether, in view of the recent fatal accident at the [bridge, and its earlier acci- [ dent history, the ministry had any plans for increasing its priority for replacement. In his reply the district commissioner of works (Mr D. B. Dallas) said that if money was available when the design was submitted the date for widening—now 19661967—could be advanced.
In the meantime, guard rails had been erected at both approaches and signs of a new type were on order and would be erected as soon as they were available. The bridge is a one-way bridge on the main highway three miles south of Kaikoura.
