Changes Sought In Olympic Selection

Several remits dealing with aspects of Olympic Games selection are to be presented at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on September 16.

The Technical club seeks the abolition of the two-cate-gory system of selecting athletes and the adoption of a uniform system of selection for the Olympic Games. The remit asks the national selectors to set qualifying standards “equal to the international standards or New Zealand standards higher than the international standards.”

A clause which proposes that future New Zealand teams be selected from three trials, one being the national championship meeting, is contained in the remit.

The Toe H club proposes the appointment of three New Zealand selectors, one to be an officially recognised statistician. Another remit from the club is aimed at recognition being given to national record-breaking performances by New Zealanders overseas. Other remits propose the holding of Canterbury children’s championships and a championship meeting for un-der-13, under-15 and under-17 grades (Shirley); the enforcement of minimum standards (University) and the holding of more inter-provincial meetings before Christmas (Technical).
