CHANCES BETTER

In Condition For Tokyo (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. New Zealand athletes for the Tokyo Olympics have a better chance of winning medals than those in any preceding team, in the opinion of the Auckland coach, Mr A. A. Lydiard. Mr Lydiard, who was in Wellington for the opening of a secondary school pupils’ coaching course, said New Zealand athletes were better conditioned than they had ever been.

Although this was the New Zealand off-season, the athletes seemed to be in the right condition at the right time.

“A lot of other countries haven’t understood this. The others are breaking records at the wrong time,” he said. Mr Lydiard affirmed that, in his opinion, Peter Snell’s main rival in the 1500 metres at Tokyo would be Dyrol Burleson.

“I like Burleson and I always have. Don’t under-esti-mate him. The day Burleson jumps Snell is going to be very interesting.”
