Competitions Festival Opens In Ashburton

The Ashburton Competitions Society’s annual festival opened yesterday with nearly 400 individual competitors and groups giving performantes at the three sessions held during the day. Fortyfour classes, mainly in the dancing, speech, and vocal and instrumental sections were decided yesterday. The festival will continue all this week, ending with demonstration concerts on Saturday. • . A feature of yesterday’s sessions was the keen public interest in the competitions and all performances were well attended. A capacity audience attended the evening session, and was rewarded with some particularly fine items by various performers The festival was officially opened last evening by the Mayor of Ashburton (Mr J. Davidson).
