Bushcraft Saved Girl’s Life
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. Bushcraft training learned at Girl Guides probably saved the life of a 16-year-old girl who spent last night lost in dense bush above Curious Cove, Queen Charlotte Sound.
Unable to see because she had broken her spectacles, alone in the bush at dark and wearing only light clothing, Lynette Griffin, of Akatarawa, made herself a bed of leaves and settled down for the night. She was found by a rescue party early this morning suffering from the cold but otherwise unharmed. “Her Girl Guide training probably saved her,” Lynette’s father, Mr F. Griffin, said this evening. “She belongs to the Kaitoke Guide group.” Lynette is one of a party of Heretaunga College, Upper Hutt, pupils spending the school holidays at Curious Cove. At Curious Cove this evening, the school party chaperone (Mrs G. J. Aitken) said Lynette was sleeping soundly.
"Her guide training helped her to retain confidence and make a bed for the night,” she said. “Unfortunately, Lynette broke her spectacles and was not able to see very well. “She’s fit enough to be coming out with us again tomorrow.” (Search, Page 14)
