Unprotected Machinery
Sir, —I was surprised to see unguarded drives on some ofthe amusement machines at the ■ Industries Fair. The Labour Department will not tolerate such conditions in factories. I wonder therefore if these machines are subject to any inspection by a competent authority to ensure the safety of both operators and public.—Yours etc., ENGINEER. August 26, 1964. [The District Superintendent of Labour (Mr C. P. Collins) said: “The Machinery Amendment Act of 1963 dealt with amusement devices requiring their registration with
the Department of Labour and a permit to be issued by the local authority. A further requirement was for the holding of a full insurance policy by the owner. Provision is also made for regulations, and the requirements in respect of amusement devices will come into force on a date to be fixed by the Governor-General in Council. Such a date has not yet been fixed.”]
