SAVE THE CHILDREN
New Premises Needed
“This is a very hard blow, especially with Christmas approaching when we have so much work and packaging- to do,” the president (Miss M. G. Havelaar) said at a meeting of the committee of the North Canterbury branch of the Save the Children Fund. She was commenting on the news that the branch's premises in Durham street were to be demolished for building extensions. Miss Havelaar urged members to “try to find”, one or two rooms in which they could continue their work. “We don’t want to pay a high rent if we can help it, for every penny spent on rent means less for the children,” she said. Details of arrangements made by a planning committee were reported by Mr M. B. Warren to the meeting. Mr Warren sard new leaflets and posters had. been designed for.the appeal, which will be held during the week October 23 and 30, and the 80,000 leaflets would be delivered with the assistance of schools and to country areas through the post. It was suggested . that the Country Women’s Institute should be asked to assist in country areas.
Window displays would be aranged in the city with some schools contributing as projects. On October 16, a stall would be held in the city,.Mrs M. Simes reported. A sewing bee stall would be held on October 19.
The meeting agreed to send £5OO to its headquarters in London to be used as general funds, and that £134 should be spent on vitamins for Laos. Mrs A. G. Dean expressed the branch’s gratitude for sewn and. knitted garments which were continually being sent for distribution overseas. People working individually and in groups were making some very lovely things, she said.
