TACTICAL WEAPON
Hovercraft For Borneo (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, August 30. Britain will send hovercraft to Borneo to chase Indonesian terrorists, says, the “Observer” defence correspondent. Secret trials were taking place at Lee-bn-Solent, Hampshire, in preparation for the dispatch of the hovercraft. The correspondent said the Ministry of Defence had confirmed that a unit would be sent to the Far East in December or shortly afterwards. The hovercraft would be used to explore the tactical value of this unconventional weapon in operations against Indonesian terrorists.
To begin with, two hovercraft would be sent. Each would carry 20 men or two tons of equipment at up to 90 m.p.h. over land or sea. If the hovercraft lived up to its promise, it could lead to a revolution in amphibious warfare, the correspondent said. The seven-ton hovercraft had a range of 275 miles and could clear 6ft high waves or solid obstacles up to 4ft
