Cars’ Long Trip To Westport
(From Our Own Reporter)
WESTPORT, July 19. After steaming between Greymouth and Westport for six days because bad weather did not permit an entry into either port, the Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Kaitangata arrived at Westport on Saturday morning with 105 motor vehicles. The cars were originally consigned to Greymouth from Auckland for distribution through the South Island. It was decided, when conditions eased considerably at Westport, to put in there instead of Greymouth. Two vehicles stacked on deck became loose on the journey, but they were lashed down before any damage was caused and the full consignment arrived in good order. Unloading began on Saturday morning, but very wet weather caused several interruptions, and the full consignment will not be cleared until tomorrow.
Dealers’ representatives from various parts of the South Island are waiting at Westport to take delivery of the vehicles.
Rough weather delayed the entry of the collier KaiUwa from Auckland to load coal for Portland and Auckland, and watersiders did not have time to clear her on Saturday after her arrival that morning. The cement-carrier. Westport, was held outside for
some time and lost one of her three anchors before making port on Saturday. The other cement ship, the Guardian Carrier, has been held up at Westport with a load for the North Island.
