N.Z. RUGBY ROUND-UP

Last-Minute Victory (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. A barnstorming finish enabled Counties to score a penalty two minutes from full-time and beat King Country, 9-6, at Papakura on Saturday. Counties had seemed headed for their third defeat in as many games this season as King Country clung to its half-time lead of 6-3 and Counties were tiring. K. H. McMillan brought the scores level with a penalty taken from almost 50 yards out, and also kicked the winning points after Counties had launched a series of fierce attacks. L. Shephard scored a try for King Country and I. Aitken kicked a penalty. E. C. Sheppard scored a try for Counties. •

Defeated On Tour Marlborough beat Bush, 19-6, in the opening match of its tour of the top end of the South Island and West Coast at Blenheim on Saturday. Although the game seldom reached a high standard, Marlborough won by four tries, two conversions and a penalty goal to a try and penalty goal.

5 Tries By Wings

UNIVERSITY B 22: N. O’Brien (3), J. Wain (2) and B. McNeill tries; T. J. Morris two conversions. BELFAST 0. It had to be against Belfast, a team which has scored no competition points this year, that University B finally achieved a result more in keeping with its ability. It was quickly apparent that Belfast stood little chance and it was simply a matter of University getting the ball to its wings who scored five tries between them. University was also rather forturtate that Morris picked this day to be out-of-sorts with his goal-kicking; the number of tries scored meant that this did not have the importance it could. University still made a few mistakes, but they did not really matter; Belfast also made a few—they did matter. Belfast spent a little' time on attack and on occasions looked quite dangerous. But silly handling errors and indecision only allowed University time to build on its already substantial lead. Referee: Mr B. E. Powell.

Ist WIN TO PAPANUI

Tournament At Blenheim

The first win by the Papanul High School first fifteen over the strong Marlborough College, highlighted the annual winter tournament between the two schools, played at Blenheim.

The match was played on a wet ground and in ' the first half Papanul attacked almost exclusively through the tactical kicking by the first five-eighths, N. L. McEntee, and the fast following by the three-quarters. The half-time score was 9-nil but in the second half, when Papanul attempted to handle more, Marlborough counterattacked strongly and almost pulled the game out of the fire. The final score was 12-8. Papanui’s only loss was in the boys’ hockey, where a more experienced Marlborough team won, 3-1. The Papanui girls’ hockey team was far too good for Marlborough and won 6-0, but the soccer team, which has usually had things very much its own way, struggled to a 2-1 victory. The two basketball matches were drawn, the score in the A match being 23-all, and 17-. all in the B teams’ match.
