Nomads Beaten In Chatham Cup

(From Our Own Reporter) NELSON, July 19. Nelson Rangers on Saturday won the right to compete in the South Island final of the Chatham Cup by beating Nomads, 3-2, in extra time.

On a surface made treacherous by recent rain, Rangers drew level with 10 minutes to go, and within five minutes of extra time scored the winning goal. Their defence was equal to the many attacks launched by Nomads in the last 25 minutes. However, the final result was against the run of play. The Nomads defence was particularly sound and the forward line was fed well and often.

The forwards, however, failed to capitalise on the tremendous amount of possession given to them and far too often lost the advantage with off-side play. Rangers, on the other hand, used possession wisely and to better advantage. Superb Goal-Keeping Rangers would not have achieved success without the brilliance of their goal-keeper, W. Milne; he played superbly.

In the Rangers forward-line. B. Clinton (centre-forward) scored two goals and B. Mcßride, the right-wing, whose centring kicks gave Clinton his goals, was another whose play reached a high level. D. Chapman made some splendid saves for Nomads and the centre-half, D. Simmonds, G. Donaldson (left-half), R. Muirson (centre-forward) and R. McLean (left-wing) were others to stand out. Rangers scored after five minutes when Clinton took McBride’s centring kick and beat Chapman with a good shot. There was no further score in the first half notwithstanding the tremendous pressure applied by Nomads. Muirson Twa Goals

The scores were levelled in the opening minutes of the second half when Muirson took McLean's centring kick and beat Milne. Then Nomads went ahead when Muirson scored his second goal. With only 10 minutes remaining. B. Thomas, who had been moved into the forward line from full-back, beat a startled Chapman when he collected a good centre from R. Batcheler on the left-wing. The only goal scored in the extra time came when Clinton headed in a finely-judged centre from Mcßride. Referee: Mr J. Nicol.

Auckland Was Overwhelmed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 19. Wellington beat Auckland, the holder, 8-1, in the North Island final of the under 18 Junior National Cup soccer series at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. Auckland never looked like containing the home team which played with intelligent understanding in the heavy conditions. Short, accurate passing had the Auckland defence sonstantly under pressure, and Wellington added five more goals to its 3-0 interval lead. Goals were scored for Wellington by B. Baker (4), R. Clark (2), D. Storm and S. Walker. Auckland’s goal came from L. Thompson.
