Nichols Six Under Par (N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) COLUMBUS (Ohio). July 19. Bobby Nichols, of Kentucky, kept his one-stroke lead at the end of the third round of the United States Professional Golfers' Association championship yesterday. He had a thirdround score of 69 for a 54-hole total of 204 (six under scratch). Arnold Palmer also had a 69 for a total of 205, two strokes ahead of Mason Rudolph and Tom Niejiorte. Rudolph and Nieporte had 68s, as did the veteran, Ben Hogan, who finished with a total of 210 for the three rounds.

Hogan was level with the defending champion, Jack Nlcklaus. who had a 70 yesterday, and Ken Venturi; Bo Wininger, and Billy Casper. Eight strokes behind the leader, on 212, was R. J Charles, of New Zealand, who had a 73 yesterday, following his rounds of 68 and 7L On the same mark was the South African, Gary Player, who had another 71. Charles went two over scratch on the first hole yesterday and one over on the third and fifth. “I was very unhappy about that start.” Charles said. "I had hoped to play well. I was in such a good position after two rounds.” Patterson Cup Patterson Cup matches played yesterday resulted:—Akaroa 6s.
