JUDGES’ PAY

Gty Post Influenced Until the salaries for judges and magistrates have been reviewed by the Government it is unlikely that a magistrate will be appointed permanently to replace Mr A. P. Blair, recently appointed an additional judge in the Court of Arbitration. No other appointments of magistrates are in view this year, but three appointments, after retirements, will have to be made in 1965. A delay in the Christchurch appointment until after the salary review that follows recommendations by the advisory committee on higher salaries in the State services could attract men in the legal profession who might not be tempted tq leave their practices for the current salary of £3OOO a year. By analogy with other recommended increases, magistrates could receive £3500 a year. Judges now receive £4250 a year, and the Chief Justice £4750.
