Of 271 anplications to enrol for the Shirley Boys’ High School next year, only 185 could be accepted, the headmaster (Mr C. V. Gallagher) told the board of governors. Mr Gallagher said a subcommittee had met and considered a list of names. It had been necessary to select because there were more applications than the school could possibly accept Unsuccessful applicants would be sent letters explaining the situation, said Mr Gallagher.
