N.Z. Scientist Appointed
(.V Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)
CANBERRA, July 17.
A former New Zealander, Dr. James Melville, has been unanimously elected chairman of Australia's most important wool-growing body, the Australian Wool Industry Conference.
The conference comprises equal representation from large and small wool-growing bodies with an independent chairman, and deals with the Government on matters affecting the wool industry. It is at present examining a proposal for a reserve price scheme, which would bring Australian wool-selling practices broadly into line with reserve price schemes already operating in New Zealand and South Africa. Dr. Melville was director of the grasslands division of the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research from 1950 to 1955. Before that, he was director of the depart- lent's plant chemistry laboratory. Since 1956, he has been director of the Wait Research Institute. Adelaide.
