£300,000 DEAL

Racing Club Land Sale

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, July 17.

General Motors (New Zealand), Ltd., will buy about 86 acres from the Wellington Racing Club on which to build its main offices and modern car and truck assembly plant announced last year The managing-director of General Motors, Mr 1. H. Chew, said today the land would cost about £300,000 and the total cost of the assembly plant project was expected to be £4.5 million. The move to Trentham would permit expansion at Petone of automotive and household appliances manufacturing. Parts and accessories would continue to be distributed from Upper Hutt. Mr Chew said his company, after the purchase, would hold some 124 acres in the Hutt Valley, sufficient on present estimates for expansion for some years to come. A project to build loose boxes, equipment sheds, sand rolls, yards and paddocks, with living accommodation for owners and trainers would be brought nearer by the sale of land to General Motors, said the president the Wellington Racing Club (Mr R. A. Whyte) today. Part of the income from the sale would also be used for improvements to public amenities, he said.
