CANTERBURY BAND CHANGES ITS NAME
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 1. The Band of the Ist Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, has had its last parade, according to a spokesman for the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre). “The position has- been explained to the men, and they are quite- happy about it,” he said. “After all, you cannot have a band of a non-exist-ent battalion., It will -no doubt continue as the Band of the 2nd Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.” The band had its final parade last Saturday, .when the position was explained, on behalf of the Minister, by
the member of Parliament for St. Albans (Mr H. J. Walker). An Army spokesman explained today that to refer to the band as that of the Canterbury Regiment was incorrect. “We have never had a regimental band,” he said. “These exist in the famous professional regiments of the United Kingdom, and the men in them are full-time professional bandsmen. “The men in our battalion bands are serving soldiers, with their own jobs in time of war.” He said the change had come about through a decision of the Army Board, approved by the Cabinet, whereby the • Canterbury, Nelson, and West Coast units were merged to form the 2nd Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.
